ECU cloning
Replacement ECU questions
What is ECU cloning?
ECU cloning is the transfer of supported software and vehicle-specific data from an original engine control unit to a compatible replacement. Depending on the ECU, this may include flash, EEPROM, processor, VIN, immobiliser or configuration data. It is not the same as coding or installing an OEM software update. Read the ECU cloning requirements.
Does the donor ECU need the same part number?
An exact matching part number is often the safest starting point, but manufacturer supersessions, hardware and software references also matter. Some officially superseded units may be compatible; similar connectors or cases alone do not prove it. Always send both labels for assessment.
Can a non-communicating ECU still be cloned?
Sometimes data can be recovered through a supported direct-access route, but a non-communicating or physically damaged original may not contain a complete usable read. Recovery is assessed individually and no result is promised before inspection.
Does reading the original ECU erase it?
Reading should not normally erase the original ECU. A write is higher risk because loss of power, unsuitable data or interruption can leave the module non-responsive. A verified backup and stable power are used where the supported route allows them.
Does cloning always make the donor plug-and-play?
No. Correct donor compatibility and usable original data are essential, and some vehicles still require coding, adaptation, relearn procedures or final vehicle-side testing.
Do you need the complete vehicle?
Some supported data transfer can be performed with removed modules. The vehicle may still be required for identification, OBD access, electrical or network checks, coding, adaptation and final testing. The required route is confirmed for each enquiry.
Programming terminology
Cloning, coding, programming and diagnosis
What is the difference between cloning, coding and programming?
Cloning transfers supported data from an original module to a compatible replacement. Coding configures supported options or vehicle variants. Programming writes supported software or data using an appropriate procedure. Diagnostic investigation tests the cause of a symptom or fault. Remapping changes supported ECU calibration. One is not automatically a substitute for another.
Does an ECU fault code prove the ECU is defective?
No. A code can be caused by low voltage, poor power or ground, wiring, connectors, CAN/LIN communication, sensors, actuators or software. The named module is not a parts verdict; diagnosis should follow test evidence. See mobile diagnostic fault investigation.
Stage 1 remapping
Suitability, results and legal responsibilities
What is a Stage 1 remap?
A Stage 1 remap adjusts supported engine-control calibration within the limitations of standard vehicle hardware. The sensible calibration depends on the engine, ECU software, gearbox, condition and modifications.
Is every vehicle suitable?
No. ECU support, software, mechanical condition, gearbox and existing modifications must be checked. A vehicle can be declined if compatibility or condition is unsuitable. See the Stage 1 compatibility assessment.
Does the vehicle need a diagnostic scan first?
A scan and health assessment may be required before tuning. Stored faults and live symptoms help establish whether the vehicle needs diagnosis or repair first.
Can a vehicle with warning lights be remapped?
Warning lights and existing faults should be diagnosed first. Remapping must not be used to hide problems involving the engine, turbocharger, fuel system, clutch, gearbox, cooling, DPF or sensors.
How much power will it gain?
No exact power or torque gain is guaranteed. Results vary with the engine, ECU software, gearbox, vehicle condition and modifications. ECU Logic UK does not publish generic estimates as promises.
Can the original software be restored?
The original ECU software should be backed up where supported. Whether it can later be restored depends on the ECU, access route, backup quality, current ECU condition and any later software changes.
Does remapping affect insurance?
It is the vehicle owner's responsibility to declare relevant modifications to the insurer and comply with the insurer's requirements.
Does Stage 1 require DPF, EGR or AdBlue removal?
No. Stage 1 remapping does not require illegal emissions-system removal. Roadworthiness, emissions and MOT rules still apply, and ECU Logic UK does not advertise unlawful road-use DPF, EGR, AdBlue or catalytic-converter bypasses.
Diagnostics and booking
Location, scope and contact information
Can diagnostics be performed at my location?
Mobile diagnostic enquiries are considered across Sunderland, Newcastle and Durham. Vehicle location, safe access and travel are confirmed before booking. Some testing or repair routes require garage facilities.
What does the £50 assessment cover?
It covers an initial review of the symptoms, a relevant scan where access allows, selected first-stage tests and an explanation of findings. Parts, repairs, programming and unlimited diagnostic time are not included unless stated. Not every fault can be fully isolated during the initial assessment. See diagnostic pricing.
What details should I send?
Send registration or VIN; make, model and year; engine and fuel type; mileage where relevant; gearbox; symptoms and fault codes; previous work; modifications; whether the original module communicates; clear original and donor labels; and vehicle or module location.
Why is proof of ownership required?
Vehicle identity, immobiliser, key or security-related module work must only support legitimate repair and replacement. Proof of ownership or garage authority may therefore be required before work is accepted.
What areas are covered?
Sunderland, Newcastle upon Tyne and Durham are the normal service area. Wider North East locations may be covered by prior agreement. Travel and the work route are confirmed before booking; see the full North East service area.
What are the working hours?
Working and contact hours are Monday to Sunday, 8:00 am–6:00 pm. These hours do not guarantee immediate attendance, emergency response or same-day service.
Still need to check your vehicle or module?
Send the complete vehicle, fault and module information for an honest assessment of the supported route.
