ECU cloning can transfer supported vehicle-specific data from an original engine control unit to a compatible replacement. Every original and donor ECU is identified and assessed before the route or result is confirmed.
An ECU can contain software, calibration and vehicle-specific information such as VIN, immobiliser or configuration data. Where the hardware and software route is supported, cloning copies the necessary data from the original ECU into a suitable donor. Cloning is different from coding a module to a vehicle and from programming it with a software package.
The exact data and access method vary by ECU. Some units can be accessed through the diagnostic socket (OBD); others require removal for bench or boot access. These terms describe how a module is read or written, not a promise that every ECU can be recovered.

Matching part numbers are a strong starting point, but manufacturer supersessions, hardware versions and software references must also be considered. The same connector does not prove compatibility.
A communicating original may allow supported EEPROM, flash or processor data to be read normally. A complete, verified backup is kept before a supported write.
Physical or electronic damage may prevent a usable read. Recovery may still be assessed, but additional work is quote required and a successful result cannot be promised before inspection.
An ECU-named fault code can be caused by power, ground, wiring, network communication, sensor supply, actuator or voltage problems. Replacing or cloning an ECU without testing can reproduce the original fault or add a compatibility problem. Diagnostic investigation may be the correct first step.
Module-only work may be possible when the necessary data can be read and written safely. The vehicle may still be required for identification, power and network checks, supported OBD work, coding, adaptation or final testing. A cloned donor is not always plug-and-play.
Reading an original ECU should not normally erase it. Writing is a higher-risk operation: interruption, unstable voltage, incorrect data or an unsuitable protocol can leave a module non-responsive. A verified backup and stable power are used where the supported route allows them.
