ECU File Checks & Software Assessment
ECU file identification, software-number checking, comparison and structural assessment for garages and vehicle owners. File-only findings are explained with their limits.
What can be checked
Supplied ECU reads may be assessed for file identity, software numbers, expected file size and structure. Two supplied reads may be compared to locate differences, and obvious corruption may be identified where the available format and information allow.
The read method, tool, ECU identity and whether the file is a full or partial read are important context. Without them, a file can be easy to misidentify.
File-only limitations
A valid-looking file does not prove the vehicle is healthy
Physical ECU condition
A structurally plausible file cannot prove that ECU power supplies, processors, drivers, connectors or internal hardware are working correctly.
Vehicle wiring and networks
A file cannot establish whether power, ground, CAN/LIN communication, sensors or actuators are functioning in the vehicle.
Suitability for writing
File appearance alone does not confirm that it matches the exact ECU, software or read/write method. Incorrect data can make a module non-responsive.

- Engine and ECU identity
- Clear ECU label photograph
- Tool and access method used
- Read type and file size
- Faults, symptoms and purpose of the check
- Both files when a comparison is requested
Lawful scope
ECU file checks support legitimate identification, comparison, repair assessment and supported programming preparation. ECU Logic UK does not advertise unlawful emissions-system removal, immobiliser or security bypass, or mileage manipulation.
Where the issue concerns a vehicle symptom rather than a supplied file, mobile diagnostic fault investigation may be more appropriate.
